The family at Veshovda

Gurine Sophie was born on September 30, 1842, and baptized in Eigersund on October 16. Her parents, farmer and carpenter Jakob Salvesen and Ane Gurie Hansdatter, lived at Veshovda, written Veshofde in the register. Her 1857 confirmation gives an October birthday, but the earlier baptism resolves the month: a child baptized on October 16 could not have been born on October 30.

Her parents had married in 1832. The marriage identifies her grandfathers as Salve Pedersen and Hans Knudsen. Four siblings are documented: Elisabeth Gurie or Gurine, Hans Gabriel, Anne Gertine or Gjertine, and Hansine. Later records link Elisabeth’s family to Veshovda and Hansine’s to Hovland.

Gurine served as a godmother to Elisabeth’s son in 1861 and Hansine’s daughter in 1867. Her parents later lived with Elisabeth’s household under a farm-maintenance arrangement called føderåd. The records establish these family ties without telling us how often Gurine saw them after moving away.

A home of their own in Kristiania

By June 1874, Gurine and seaman Severin Anstensen were both living at Grønlandsleiret 21 in Kristiania. They married at Grønland church on June 7. Their four known children were Anton, born July 24, 1874; Marie Sofie, March 15, 1877; Jacob Andreas Gunvald, December 10, 1881; and Gundette Cecilie, November 8, 1887.

The household was at number 12 by 1885. In 1891 it included foster child Fransiska Olsen. Gurine, Severin and Anton had been sponsors at her baptism the previous year. This documents care and a shared home, without establishing adoption or biological kinship.

Severin died on June 5, 1897, aged fifty-one. His widow reported the death, and the estate register records four children and no estate assets. Their youngest, Cecilie, was nine. Gurine was fifty-four.

Twenty-four hospital years—and five at Parliament

The 1900 census finds the widowed Sofie at Dovregata 7, cleaning at Rikshospitalet. Anton worked at a mechanical factory; sailor Jacob was temporarily absent; Cecilie was still at home.

A pension proposal supplies a much fuller work history. At retirement in 1916, Gurine was credited with twenty-four years at Rikshospitalet and five earlier years cleaning at the Storting, Norway’s Parliament. Her final hospital wage was two kroner a day plus meals. The record describes her as ill and bedridden, without giving a diagnosis.

A royal resolution of October 20, 1916, awarded an annual pension of 400 kroner; Parliament approved it on March 24, 1917. These details belong to Gurine’s history. They must not be transferred to daughter Marie or used to explain the unverified family caregiving story.

Counting twenty-four years back from 1916 suggests hospital work beginning around 1892, but that is an estimate, not a proved appointment date. The stronger conclusion is that her paid working life began well before Severin died.

Three generations under one roof

In 1910, Gurine, Marie and granddaughter Bergliot were recorded at Nordahl Bruns gate 3. Cecilie, her husband Paul Nessjø and baby Arne formed a second household in the same apartment: two rooms and one kitchen. The arrangement is documented; the division of expenses and care is not.

By 1920, Gurine was listed as a state pensioner with Cecilie, Paul and Arne. Her final home was still Nordahl Bruns gate 3. She died on August 9, 1926, aged eighty-three. Cecilie was the informant on the estate notification, which records two adult children, one in Sandefjord and one in Oslo, and no estate assets.

The newspaper notice names Marie and Cecilie. Both sons had died before their mother: Anton at Rikshospitalet on June 21, 1910, and Jacob in the wreck of Ocean in 1911. Sofie reported Anton’s death to the probate court. His union separately approved a 900-kroner insurance benefit for her; its notice does not establish when she received it. Her daughters’ farewell described a self-sacrificing mother. The surviving records give that tribute a concrete setting: nearly three decades of paid work and a home repeatedly shared across generations.
