## Letter 9 — Mount Vernon, November 18 [1857] One historical translation page compared; this also occurs in Hilpert Letters 1. **Corrections and inherited identifications:** Gotthold Leukroth is the preferred historical spelling, with Lenkroth retained as a recorded variant. The business figure is 700 dollars and the supply city Cincinnati, not 400/Boston. The town is described as little changed; references include two churches and brick houses, not breweries. The letter recalls a house where David and Schlässer had stayed. **Family news:** Mother, sister and Reinhold are reported well, and a daughter had been born in spring. Do not force that seasonal report into exact agreement with Selma's age in Letter 10. The inquiry sent to Europe concerns an unnamed brother; it cannot establish August's death or survival. **Limits:** The year 1857 and the Indiana identification are historical editorial information, not fully written in the manuscript heading. Acquaintances' names and gaps in the closing remain unresolved. The older translation itself contains omissions, so it is not a complete restoration. Reviewed September 24, 2026.
